Now and then, a social media post stops you in your tracks. Not because it's sensational. Not because it's controversial. But because it's painfully honest.
Recently, iVegan, a beloved plant-based restaurant in Legazpi Village, Makati, shared a message no entrepreneur ever wants to write. After years of investing their savings, sacrificing sleep, and pouring their hearts into building a restaurant that has touched countless lives, they revealed they may soon have to close their doors unless they receive enough support in the coming weeks.
It wasn't a marketing campaign. It wasn't a publicity stunt. It was a heartfelt plea.
As I read their message, I couldn't help but wonder: how many other small businesses are quietly fighting the same battle, only without telling anyone?
Perhaps that's the real story. For many of us, restaurants are simply places where we eat. For the owners, they're dreams built one customer at a time. For me, iVegan has always been much more than a restaurant.

Over the years, it became one of my favorite places to visit with my two beloved dogs, Andy and Fergus. They were always welcomed with genuine warmth by the staff, whose kindness made every visit feel personal. It wasn't unusual to see tails wagging long before we reached our table. That welcoming atmosphere turned an ordinary meal into an experience we looked forward to sharing.
As someone who has spent years pursuing calisthenics, strength training, and an athletic lifestyle, iVegan also became an unexpected partner in my wellness journey. A lot of people assume eating healthy means bland meals or restrictive diets that eventually become impossible to sustain.

iVegan proved otherwise. Their menu showed that plant-based food can be hearty, satisfying, nutritious, and genuinely delicious. They made healthy eating feel less like a sacrifice and more like a lifestyle anyone could actually enjoy. Looking back, I realize they played a quiet but meaningful role in helping me maintain my athletic physique through the years, without ever making healthy eating feel like a burden.
At its heart, this isn't a story about vegan food. It's a story about entrepreneurship, resilience, and community.
Behind every independent café, neighborhood restaurant, and family-owned establishment are people who have quietly invested everything they have into a vision. They mortgage their savings, sacrifice weekends with their families, miss holidays, endure sleepless nights, and carry the daily weight of making payroll while hoping enough customers walk through their doors tomorrow.
We celebrate ribbon-cuttings. We celebrate grand openings. We celebrate business awards. Rarely do we celebrate the perseverance it takes just to keep a small business alive.
The harsh reality is that many independent businesses don't close because they lack quality. They struggle because rising operational costs, inflation, changing consumer habits, intense competition, and economic uncertainty gradually wear down even the strongest entrepreneurial spirit. A handful of customers can sometimes determine whether a business survives another month or quietly disappears for good.
Unfortunately, many of us don't realize how much a place has meant to our lives until it's already preparing to say goodbye. We postpone our visits. We tell ourselves we'll go next weekend. We'll celebrate there next month. We'll eventually try that restaurant everyone keeps recommending. Sometimes, "eventually" never comes. By the time we decide to return, the lights have already gone out.
In many ways, our spending habits shape the kind of communities we create. Every time we choose to support a local entrepreneur, we're doing more than buying a meal or a product. We're helping preserve jobs, sustain families, encourage innovation, and protect the unique character that independent businesses bring to our neighborhoods.

Restaurants like iVegan are more than establishments serving food. Long after we've forgotten what we ordered, we remember how those places made us feel.
I sincerely hope this isn't the final chapter of iVegan's story.
I write this because I enjoy their food, because Andy and Fergus loved every visit, and because I believe every thriving city needs businesses rooted in passion, kindness, courage, and purpose.
