Telegram briefly vanished from Apple's App Store worldwide on Tuesday after Apple flagged content that violated its rules on child sexual abuse material. The app returned hours later once Telegram addressed the issue.
The removal affected only new downloads and updates — existing users kept using the app as normal, but anyone searching for it or trying to install it hit missing listings and broken download links. Apple later confirmed the suspension followed an App Store review that uncovered prohibited content posted by a single user.
According to Apple, Telegram responded quickly, removing the material and permanently banning the account responsible. Once those steps were completed, Apple restored the app to the store the same day.
The brief removal still sparked speculation. Some users wondered whether it tied back to founder Pavel Durov's legal troubles or broader regulatory pressure on the platform. Apple said otherwise, making clear the action was tied specifically to a violation of its App Store policy on child sexual abuse material, not any political or legal dispute.
Telegram acknowledged the incident with a joke, posting on X: "Reports of my demise are greatly exaggerated 🍎." The company also reiterated its zero-tolerance policy toward such material, saying it has blocked nearly 338,000 groups and channels linked to it this year.
Telegram pointed to changes made after a similar App Store suspension in 2018, including automated detection systems built to catch abusive material faster. The platform's moderation record has stayed under scrutiny since — beyond the 2018 removal, it has faced investigations and regulatory action in several countries over how it handles illegal content.
