Nintendo gave the Super Mario logo its biggest redesign in about 15 years — more depth, shine and beveled edges — after the franchise's 40th anniversary.

Nintendo has quietly given the Super Mario logo a power-up to close out the franchise's 40th-anniversary year. The redesign keeps the wordmark's familiar shape but adds noticeably more depth, shine and dimension.

The updated logo appeared recently on Nintendo's official Super Mario website. The colors and the letters' irregular shapes are untouched, but the treatment now reads as far more three-dimensional. Gray beveled edges, added highlights and a glossier finish make the letters look less like a flat graphic and more like objects lifted straight out of one of Mario's 3D worlds.

It's easy to miss at first glance. Nintendo kept the overall silhouette intact rather than pushing a full rebrand, opting instead for a light polish that reads as evolutionary rather than dramatic — a deliberate choice for a logo that had barely changed in years.

The outgoing version had been in place since roughly 2011, which makes this one of the more noticeable tweaks to the main Super Mario logo in about 15 years. The branding has shifted repeatedly since the 1980s: pixel-based lettering gave way to the colorful, chunkier wordmark that came to define the franchise through the 1990s and 2000s.

The timing lines up with the close of Nintendo's yearlong celebration of Super Mario Bros. turning 40. The original game launched in Japan on Sept. 13, 1985, and Nintendo kicked off its anniversary programming in September 2025. Dedicated events at the Nintendo Museum wrapped up on Sept. 7, 2026, capping a run that spanned games, merchandise and other releases tied to the milestone.

Nintendo used the anniversary to dig back into Mario's history from multiple angles. Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 landed on Switch, new amiibo hit shelves, Super Mario Bros. Wonder picked up extra content, and Super Mario Sunshine joined the Nintendo Classics GameCube lineup. "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie" also arrived earlier this year as part of the celebration.

The refresh extends beyond the logo. Nintendo has also updated some of Mario's character artwork on its website, with newer renders showing more visible fabric texture and sharper clothing detail — a look that lines up with the added dimension in the new wordmark.

Mario just turned 40. Judging by the new shine on his logo, he's not slowing down.
