Apple's first foldable iPhone, widely expected to be branded "iPhone Ultra," is reportedly on track for a September 2026 debut — but new supply-chain reporting suggests U.S. buyers could get it well before anyone else.
The claim comes from Australian outlet ChannelNews, citing a major Chinese component supplier. According to the report, Apple plans to unveil its foldable iPhone in September, with initial availability limited to the United States. Australia could wait several months for the device, and other major markets, potentially including parts of Europe and Asia, may also miss the first wave.
Supply looks tight everywhere
Production capacity appears to be the core issue. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo estimates shipments of just 500,000 to 1 million units in the third quarter, scaling up to roughly 7 million to 8 million units across the back half of 2026 — a fraction of what Apple typically ships for a flagship launch.
That constraint could hit U.S. buyers, too. Kuo has suggested Apple may debut the foldable at its September event without shipping in volume right away, with some early orders stretching four to six weeks or more into the fourth quarter. Supply isn't expected to loosen up until around the first quarter of 2027.
Why a foldable is harder to build
The hinge and flexible display remain the two biggest engineering hurdles, according to multiple reports, with durability, overall thickness and screen-crease visibility all under close scrutiny during development. Producing those components reliably at iPhone-level scale is likely the main reason behind a more limited rollout.
Pricing and design
Kuo puts the foldable's price at roughly $2,300 to $2,500, well above Apple's existing Pro Max lineup. That would position it as a distinct premium tier rather than a mainstream iPhone replacement.
On design, the device is expected to follow a book-style, fold-out format similar to Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold line rather than a compact flip-phone shape. Current reports point to a 7.8-inch interior display and a 5.5-inch exterior screen, letting the phone function closer to a small tablet when unfolded.
Precedent for a US-first launch
Apple has taken this approach before with unfamiliar hardware. The Vision Pro launched exclusively in the U.S. in February 2024 before rolling out to additional markets months later. A staggered foldable launch would give Apple more time to scale manufacturing, monitor early performance and prepare wider distribution.
The launch also lines up with a broader shift in Apple's release strategy. Rather than launching the full iPhone 18 lineup together, reports indicate Apple plans to introduce its premium models, including the iPhone 18 Pro line and the foldable, first, with the standard iPhone 18 following in 2027.
